Lew “The Jew” Alberts, Bowery Tattooer, 1880-1954
Lew Alberts, also known as Albert Morton Kurzman, was a prominent figure in the world of tattooing. Born on December 13, 1880, he was the son of Jewish immigrants and lived in both Brooklyn and Manhattan during his childhood. Alberts was sent to a technical high school where he studied drawing and metalwork, and it was here that he developed a passion for art and design.
After completing his education, Alberts worked as a wallpaper designer. However, his life took a significant turn when he enlisted in the army in 1899 and served during the Spanish-American War in the Philippines. It is said that he was tattooed during his time in the military and also learned the art of tattooing. Upon returning to the US, Alberts was disappointed by the lack of quality in tattoo designs and decided to bring his own unique style to the industry. He settled in Charlie Warner’s Studio in Chatham Square, New York City and began redesigning tattoo flash, professionally known as “Lew the Jew.”
Throughout his career, Alberts worked with several other prominent tattoo artists, including Charlie Wagner. During this time, he also sold his designs through advertisements in publications like Police Gazette. However, there is no record of Alberts forming a supply business, despite the fact that many tattooists from this era offered machines, pigments, needles, and other supplies on their business cards.
Alberts was known for his unique style and innovative designs, which set him apart from other tattoo artists of his time. He was highly sought after by clients who wanted to make a statement with their tattoos, and his popularity only continued to grow. However, as the competition in the tattoo industry became more intense, Alberts decided to move his shop to his home in Newark, New Jersey and semi-retire.
Despite his semi-retirement, Alberts remained an influential figure in the world of tattooing. He was known for his dedication to the art form and his commitment to creating high-quality designs. He was also known for his attention to detail and his ability to create tattoos that were both beautiful and meaningful.
Throughout his life, Alberts faced many challenges, but he never lost his passion for tattooing. He continued to create new designs and inspire others with his work, even as he faced competition from other artists. Despite the fact that he faced many obstacles, Alberts remained committed to his craft and never let his love for tattooing fade.
Lew Alberts was a true pioneer in the world of tattooing. He brought his unique style and innovative designs to the industry, and his work continues to inspire others to this day. He was a dedicated artist who never lost his passion for his craft, and his legacy will live on for generations to come.
