Lyle Tuttle grew up in Ukiah, California. His fascination in tattoos seemed to come at a young age. He got his first tattoo when he was 14, and it sparked his passion for the art form. He exposed himself to the traditions of Japanese tattooing while in the US Navy while stationed in Japan. It didn’t take long to incorporate the Japanese themes into his own work.
Upon returning to the United States, Tuttle opened his own tattoo studio in San Francisco, which quickly became one of the most popular and influential tattoo shops in the country. He worked alongside other legendary tattoo artists of the time, such as Ed Hardy, and Zeke Owen and helped to popularize the art form in the United States.
